Writing prompts for every age
Prompts for kids are short, playful and easy to picture, like a dragon applying for a job at a bakery. Prompts for teens lean into friendship, school and first big choices. Prompts for adults give you more complex situations with a hidden question to explore.
The genres cover fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, horror, romance, adventure, realistic fiction and funny stories. Romance prompts are only shown for teens and adults.
Tips to get more from a prompt
- Start in the middle. Skip the introduction and open with the moment something goes wrong.
- Ask "why?" three times. Why is the character there? Why now? Why does it matter to them? Your plot is hiding in the answers.
- Change one detail. If a prompt feels close but not right, change the setting or the main character and see what happens.
- Write badly first. The first draft only has to exist. You can fix it later.

What is a writing prompt?
A writing prompt is a short idea, question or situation that gives you something to write about. It removes the hardest part of writing: deciding where to start.
Do I have to use the prompt exactly as written?
No. Change the names, the place or the ending. A prompt is a starting point, not a rule.
